This site is designed to be an information "hub" for homeschool families in Northern Nevada, Reno, Sparks, Carson City, Fernley, Fallon, Minden, Gardnerville and adjacent areas. Members of Reno Homeschool created this site to assist families who are are considering homeschooling, or who are homeschooling select curriculum, find tutors, and get support through our yahoo discussion group. This site is also meant to help parents who can't homeschool find information to supplement their childs educational program. Our group is broad based with academics and social skills being the primary focus. The Yahoo discussion group is for homeschooling families and those whose children are in Washoe County School district and surrounding schools but are considering homeschool education. Please feel free to call us or leave a message at 825-3331 and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

Notice of intent form page. This will be your first step. Nevada requires you notify them you are going to homeschool. New residents to the district must file a notice of intent within 30 days of moving. To avoid problems hand deliver your notice of intent and get a stamped form letter acknowledging you did it. Do this either before or on the day you pull your child out of school. It takes minutes to fill out the 2 page form. Don't wait until after you selected your curriculum because the district can say your child was truant if they don't have that notification to homeschool and your child is not in school.

IT's LAW IN NEVADA THAT PARENTS HAVE THE LEGAL RIGHT TO HOMESCHOOL THEIR CHILD. THEY DON't NEED PERMISSION. THEY ONLY FILL OUT AND SUBMIT A NOTICE OF INTENT (SEE FORM) AND GIVE IT TO THE SCHOOL DISTRICT.

The costs for books and equipment can range from $40 up to hundreds depending on if you choose new or used curriculum. You should be able to find a curriculum that fits your budget. Choosing will be difficult because of the endless amount of high quality programs and materials on the market. Most families spend under $600 a year. You can purchase from E-bay, Amazon.com (used books) or from homeschool websites to keep your costs to a minimum.

The most important factor is putting your child in the best environment possible. Many public schools are over crowded, have disruptive students and are overall poor learning environments. This is your chance to get your child out of a negative environment, be it emotional or academic. If they are not learning you can reverse that problem before they lose their love of learning. Most homeschool parents report that their biggest reqret was not pulling their child out sooner.

Of course you will have your ups and downs teaching your own child but the rewards will be more than worth it. You will have control over the values they learn. They will no longer be "in a can with the lid closed" learning only information to pass a standardized test (No Child Left Behind Act 2001).
