Writing Benchmarks from ASHA

Barbara Ehren, EdD

Emergent (Initial)

1. Produces marks on paper for a purpose.
2. Identifies written texts.
3. Writes upon request.
4. Writes some letters from the alphabet.
5. Recognizes that print holds meaning.
6. Produces written symbols for the purpose of representing meaning.

Emergent (Developing)

1. Understands that written language is used to convey meaning.
2. Demonstrates an awareness that written symbols express meaning.
3. Experiments with and practices ways of conveying meaning in writing.

Early (Initial)

1. Writes brief narrative and /or expository texts that contain related ideas about familiar topics.
2. Describes some of the purposes for writing.
3. Uses written English language conventions that can be interpreted by others.
4. Uses talk to plan and review own writing.
5. Attempts to spell words by using knowledge of sound symbol relationships and of letter and blend patterns.

Early (Developing)

1. Experiments with interrelated ideas and information when writing about familiar topics.

2. Models writing on literature read.

3. Recognizes that certain types of texts are associated with particular audiences and purposes.

4. Experiments with organizational patterns when writing.

5. Makes consistently informed attempts at spelling.

6. Experiments with different strategies for planning, revising, and editing own writing.

Fluent ( Initial)

1. Uses writing to reflect upon familiar ideas, events, and information.
2. Writes to reflect context, purpose, and audience.
3. Writes narrative and expository text.
4. Employs a broad variety of strategies to incorporate correct spelling in personal writing.

Fluent ( Developing)

1. Uses a variety of text types when writing about both familiar subjects and exploring new ideas/knowledge.
2. Identifies the impact of context, audience, and purpose on written texts.
3. Communicates ideas clearly in written texts of length and complexity.
4. Uses multiple planning and monitoring strategies in order to effectively complete a variety of tasks.
